About the bookBlood on the River is set in 1936 during the Great Depression. With his mother having passed, and following years living in orphanages and foster homes, Bud sets out to find his father armed only with his suitcase full of personal secrets and a clue about his father's identity in the form of flyers for the music of the Dusky Devastators of the Depression. Along the way Bud encounters hornets, vampires, starvation, and muskrat stew - among other things. Along the way Bud writes about his lessons learned in Bud Caldwell's Rules and Things for Having a Funner Life and Making a Better Liar Out of Yourself. Notable themes include family, depression, and the kindness of strangers. Blood on the River is the first book to receive both the Newbery Medal for excellence in American children's literature and the Coretta Scott King Award (given to outstanding African-American authors). Bud, Not Buddy was also recognized with the William Allen White Children's Book Award for grades 6-8, and several other awards and recognitions. This book is highly encouraged for grades 5-8. “Curtis draws on a remarkable and disarming mix of comedy and pathos…Bud’s journey, punctuated by Dickensian twists in plot and enlivened by a host of memorable personalities, will keep readers engrossed.”—Publishers Weekly, Starred “Curtis has given a fresh, new look to a traditional orphan-finds-a-home story that would be a crackerjack read-aloud.”—School Library Journal, Starred “Curtis writes with a razor-sharp intelligence that grabs the reader by the heard and never lets go…. Highly recommended.”—Voice of Youth Advocates, Starred “The rich blend of tall tale, slapstick, sorrow, and sweetness has the wry, teasing warmth of family folklore.”—Booklist
